Position Overview

The University of Calgary opened its first overseas branch campus with generous financial support from the State of Qatar and began delivering undergraduate nursing programs in 2007. Since then, the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) has been educating the future nursing leaders in Qatar by offering Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing programs accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN).

To sustain its growth in promoting and increasing the profile of professional nursing practice in Qatar, the University of Calgary in Qatar is currently seeking an EAP Instructor.  This is an excellent opportunity for established ESL Instructors who are passionate about teaching in an international environment.

The successful applicants must be able to relocate to Doha, Qatar in time for Winter term (January 2019). This is a two-year contract renewable on a yearly basis upon mutual agreement.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develops the syllabus for the course according to the program curriculum and outcomes for the course.
  • Teaches the course using teaching/learning methodologies/strategies based on the language proficiency level, academic skills level, and content needs of the students.  Monitors and assesses student-learning outcomes throughout the course and adjusts teaching, content and materials accordingly.
  • Develops appropriate assessment and assessment tools for the course.
  • Identifies students requiring extra assistance for success and provides this, and/or develops a program with the Learning Commons to support the students. Refers students to the Student Counselor for assistance if necessary.
  • Collaborates with academic staff in Nursing, Foundation, Teaching & Learning and Learning Commons to exchange expertise and knowledge, participate in research and projects to develop and improve academic content, methodologies, materials and student supports in all programs to promote excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Participates in committees and initiatives within the department and the university at large.
  • Remains current in competencies and knowledge in the chosen academic field through Professional Development.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must be a holder of a Canadian passport;
  • Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience teaching ESL to adults, preferably at the advanced or EAP level at the university level.
  • Ability to work productively in a framework of operations that fully respects the laws, practices, culture and religion of Qatar
