Position Overview

The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) is a Canadian-based educational institution whose mandate is to enrich the health and wellness in Qatar and the Gulf region through world-class education of nursing leaders and practitioners.  Under the generous financial support from the State of Qatar, the University began delivering undergraduate nursing programs in 2007.  Student enrolment has steadily increased during the years, and now the University offers several nursing education streams, including a Master’s degree program.

Position Overview:

This position reports to the Director, Information and Communication Technology, and works with a team of IT Support Technicians, Senior Network Technician, and AV Support team. The System Administrator will provide day to day server administration on any and all server-based services at UCQ including but not limited to Windows Server, Active Directory, Windows Software Update Services, Active Directory Group Policy, DHCP, DNS, general Windows server-based services, web services, SharePoint, Microsoft SQL Server, digital signage, and Microsoft-based media systems. The incumbent liaises with infrastructure staff in the administration of the operating systems that provide these services and in the building and maintaining of servers, operating systems, and most especially the IT   services themselves.

Working cooperatively in a team environment within the Information Technology group of the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ),  the Systems Administrator works on a significant number of moderately complex, diverse projects and must be able to accommodate changing priorities, multiple and often simultaneous deadlines, occasional overtime is a required to meet deadlines.

This position is a considered a hands-on technical leader of the UCQ IT desktop support team.  A high degree of individual judgment and in-depth technical skills are required in order to take immediate action on issues that arise. The nature of the work is dynamic and requires the Administrator to possess excellent time management and leadership skills, good interpersonal skills, an ability to cope with stressful situations, and to work an erratic and inconsistent schedule.

Ideally, the successful applicant must be able to relocate to Doha, Qatar in August 2018. This is a two-year contract renewable on yearly terms thereafter and upon mutual agreement.

Position Description

Accountabilities:
 

System Administration (65%)

  • The Administrator is the primary technical point of contact and communicates as such with technology leaders at main campus to ensure enterprise systems at main campus in Calgary are functioning properly for UCQ stakeholders.
  • This position also oversees operations associated with the support of software infrastructure services required to sustain all IT applications at UCQ.
  • Designs and implements Windows Server, desktop,  and classroom media solutions for all faculty and staff at UCQ
  • Administers all Windows servers at the UCQ campus.
  • Provides senior level technical advice to the Director of Information Technology Qatar on long-range plans for the deployment of future Windows server and desktop services.
  • Plans, in consultation with the Senior Network Analyst, the high level IT requirements for UCQ faculty, staff, and students.

Desktop Technical Leadership (20%)

  • The Administrator behaves as the lead system and application support person and possesses a highly developed skill set to solve major complex system administration and desktop technical problems. 
  • The Administrator delegates IT desktop tasks received from the Director to other members of the desktop support team. This position assigns work to desktop/AV support staff and creates schedules for work to be completed.
  • The Administrator develops and continuously refines all IT onboarding for beginning of semester students and new employees
  • Shows leadership in the provisioning of software/hardware analysis and maintenance, installation and troubleshooting of staff technology, student labs, and video conferencing systems

Business Development (15%)

  • This position provides leadership and consulting services in the administration of systems and desktop technology solutions required by staff, faculty and students at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ). 
  • Manages the tracking of all campus-wide server and desktop IT assets
  • Communicates with external system, desktop service and media service providers to ensure that hardware and software associated with campus-wide servers and desktop and classroom services are operational and maintained.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint would be a definite asset.

Qualifications/Expertise Required:

  • Must be a holder of Canadian passport
  • Preferably a University graduate with a degree related to Information Technology; a college IT diploma will extensive field experience may also be considered
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in IT systems administration is required; familiarity with main campus IT systems would be an advantage
  • Must have technical competence at a senior level and should possess effective skills in providing technical direction to desktop/AV services staff
  • Able to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders such as professors, instructors and researchers, and external service providers in all aspects of system and desktop services.
  • Has strong organizational and planning skills in effective provisioning of server and desktop related services.
  • Expert knowledge of theory and practical application of server, desktop and mobile systems using IP based connectivity over LAN, WAN and the commercial internet.
  • Expert knowledge in Microsoft Windows (both Server and Desktop) including but not limited to Windows Server, Windows Software Update Services, Print Services, Windows Group Policy, Active Directory, SharePoint, Microsoft SQL Server, DHCP, DNS, and other various windows systems and applications.  
  • Significant experience in deploying and managing third-party business applications on Windows servers
  • Significant experience working collaboratively with other technical analysts, applications developers, network and operational staff.
  • Proven abilities in resolving complex problems quickly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Experience with system integrity, security and access controls.
  • Ability to work productively in a framework of operations that fully respects the laws, practices, culture and religion of Qatar.
